Youth In Media Program

Empowering Youth Through Media: Youth In Media

Youth In Media is an intensive media training program aimed at involving young people in creating constructive media content. Our immersive training method provides media capture, editing, and broadcasting equipment to the youth, enabling them to create programming that aligns with their interests. We encourage the youth to generate their own topics, coverage, and editing styles to produce content that promotes positive ideals.

Throughout the 5-week program, students will acquire knowledge of filming, editing, and sound techniques. Our team will provide guidance and suggestions to aid the youth in crafting their programming. The program’s project base will range from a field activity recap to a mini livestream youth newscast. Our primary objective is to encourage youth to cover their peers engaging in positive activities, fostering an environment that promotes positive media.

Our in-house program can accommodate a maximum of six youths during the five-week session, whereas our on-location program can cater to up to ten youths between the ages of 12 and 18.

We aim to collaborate with local school districts to generate media exposure for their sports teams. In particular, we seek to engage youths located in Swissvale Borough and surrounding areas. Although we plan to expand our reach in the future, our current focus is on the local youth community.

Grind City Media Studio provides comprehensive in-house courses that encompass equipment, location, and expert instruction. In addition, we offer the convenience of traveling to partner organizations, providing necessary equipment to help them achieve their objectives. Our weekly sessions comprise three-hour classes.

Youth In Media Matters is an initiative that groups participants into five teams of two to execute a video project. Each team is responsible for specific duties aimed at achieving project success. Here’s a breakdown of each team’s responsibilities:

  • Social Media Team: This team is responsible for filming, editing, and uploading social media posts to the partnered organization’s profile.
  • Field Film Team: The Field Film team captures footage of field events that works in collaboration with the Edit team.
  • Edit Team: The Edit team creates an organization template for the footage received from the field team and prepares it for the final presentation. They’re also responsible for editing the footage.
  • Broadcast Team: The Broadcast team conducts interviews with all subjects for the recap video and some social media posts. They work closely with the Social Media team.
  • Equipment Managers: The Equipment Managers handle all equipment, assign and collect it, and inspect it. They work with all teams.
  • Team Leads: The Team Leads are responsible for the entire project’s success. They check progress, assist when needed, and document all team activities weekly. They provide a weekly team report and video of all activities.

The teams’ collaborative effort ensures that the project is executed efficiently and effectively, enabling Youth In Media to achieve its objectives.

WEEK 1

Welcome to the first week of our project, “Intro”  – This week we will focus on introductions, team assignments, and project pitches. Our primary objective is to acquaint ourselves with one another, form cohesive teams, and present our project proposals. Our goal is to collaborate with each other’s unique strengths and interests to conceive a project that we’re all passionate about. We’re excited to engage our young participants in a challenging yet enjoyable task while ensuring their comfort with the necessary equipment. Additionally, we will be creating media badges, which we hope to wear with pride!

WEEK 2

Welcome to Week Two  of our program “ Capture” let us strive to capture the essence of our realm through the lens of our devices. Our goal is to weave a tapestry of wonder with the images and footage we gather. Additionally, let us embrace the curiosity that drives us, for it is the very spark that ignites our creativity.

WEEK 3

Welcome to Week Three of our program, “Content editing” which delves into two distinct editing styles: “Short Editing” and “Long Editing.”

“Short Editing,” also known as “Speedy Gonzales,” caters to creating concise, engaging content for social media posts, auto-captions, and stop-motion videos.

Contrarily, “Long Editing” is an elaborate process that requires a collective team effort, aiming to produce an expertly crafted and polished end product. It’s a meticulous endeavor, but the final outcome is undoubtedly worth the effort.

WEEK 4

Welcome to week Three of our program “ Editing and final touches”. We are thrilled to present a comprehensive report on the performance of our social media posts from the preceding weeks. Furthermore, we are delighted to offer you an exclusive preview of the final product. Get ready to be amazed!

WEEK 5

We have reached the thrilling conclusion of Week 5! Our team of social media experts and accomplished broadcasters will be stepping into the spotlight to conduct live interviews with participants, capturing their valuable insights on the final project.

This program is free for the youth. We are looking for funding to help us get more equipment for the program.
